School District of Janesville reminds families of inclement weather procedures

JANESVILLE—As Winter 2024-25 approaches, the School District of Janesville (SDJ) is providing reminders regarding plans to notify parents and guardians in the event inclement weather causes a school closing or a delay in starting school.

For school closings or delayed-start situations, the Superintendent will make that determination the night before, if at all possible, or no later than 6 a.m. on the day of the closing or delay. District staff will send a message to families through the SDJ messaging system using its phone call, email, and text messaging features. SDJ will post the information to the district website and social media channels and notify local media outlets. It is very important parents/guardians verify their contact information in the Infinite Campus system to ensure settings are marked appropriately for how they wish to receive school closing information. This is especially important if families have moved or have changed telephone numbers since initially setting up their Infinite Campus accounts.

As mentioned earlier, in addition to direct messages sent to families through our messaging system, all school closing/delay information will be posted online. Families are encouraged to visit the SDJ website homepage (www.janesville.k12.wi.us) or the SDJ Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SDJK12/) for school closings/delays. In many instances, the information on school closing/delay will become ‘live’ on those sites before the SDJ’s telephone/texting messaging system can complete its calls/notifications to more than 10,000 contacts. Closing and delayed-start information will also be provided to local news outlets including the Janesville Gazette, WCLO, and the Madison local TV stations that post school closings or delay to respective websites and broadcast stations.

If the SDJ decides a 2-hour delay in starting school is needed, middle and high school classes will begin at 10 a.m. with elementary school starting at 10:15 a.m. On delay days, school breakfast will not be available, while lunch will be available. The SDJ school calendar has time built in to accommodate some weather delays/closures. With that in mind, the SDJ will allow for two inclement weather days to be just that &ndash ‘snow days’ on which no school work will be required of students. With any potential additional inclement weather days beyond the first two, the SDJ will communicate plans to address missed instructional hours that might need to be made up. State law (http://dpi.wi.gov/cal/days-hours) governs the required number of hours of instruction for all school districts in Wisconsin. SDJ calendar information is available at https://www.janesville.k12.wi.us/about-us/calendar.
